Over the last seven days I've seen that same sweet community come together to put out literal fires, drive by neighbors' homes to report back what they could see, or not see. I've seen families take families into their homes. I've received emails of donation lists from people I don't know whose children attended this school years before mine, or years after mine did. One friend who lost her home had a group of families over for dinner at their temporary house to show their children that, in her words, "people make a home." I've seen people use their resources (businesses, talents, connections, and physical spaces) to serve one another. I've seen the best of humanity come together to serve, support and love their community.
There are many precious communities just like our little elementary school that have been devastated, and many of its individuals are right here in our Liberty Road community. For those who've lost their home or been displaced, we are deeply sorry for your unfathomable loss--there are no words. For those able to support and care for your Liberty Road neighbors, please join this collective effort.
We have created two google docs: one for those who need support and another for those who want to support. We will update these documents in the coming days and weeks as new information rolls in. These documents house some resources you've already seen and some that might be new to you. The idea to to create a single vetted resource that you can use and share with others.
If you have lost your home and have a fund or a specific need, please email me at nada@liberty-road.com.
I am a confident that our beautiful city of Los Angeles and her precious people will rise again because of the collection of communities, just like this one, that come alongside and lift one another up. In the recent words of Jennifer Garner, “we are going to have to be God's hands.”
xx-Nada
NOTE: We will only be sharing links to GoFundMes and other donation sites on behalf of those in our existing Liberty Road community (subscribers, former event ticket holders and INSIDERS). We know there are need beyond this, but it is the only way we can responsibly vet donation links.
One week ago today, my family was evacuated for what we were sure was a precautionary measure. Unlike so many, we were able to return to our home.
As texts poured in, we learned that our precious elementary school where my three children wore their tiny uniforms, swung “really high in the sky”, learned to share, and walked hand in hand with friends was gone. The surrounding neighborhood where mothers gathered to organize school functions and ended up finding life-long friendships had vanished. Countless friends lost their homes and the life they knew.
