Creating Your Personal Fall Look With Accessories

Curated by Tricia Ferrante

My wardrobe leans on the classic side, so I've always used accessories to make the ultimate statement. A chunky cuff, bold earrings, or a layered chain necklace? These are fun means of expression. Layer them ( I love layering!), use your intuition, and have fun. This is where you can really develop your personal style.

Speaking of fun, accessorizing continues beyond the jewelry. Scarves, sunglasses, belts, bags, and shoes are all players to weave into your look. Consider if there’s an area of your body that you want to highlight. For instance, a scarf or necklaces bring the focus up to your face, while a belt draws attention to your waist.

The following are some of the best jewelry, bags, and scarves of the season to get your ideas flowing—plus my tips for accessorizing all with ease.

Tips From Your Style Editor

Some accessories will change based on the season, while others will become your staples throughout the year. Remember, the little details can turn a minimal classic look into something new and modern.

Jewelry

  • Think in proportions. A general rule is to keep the focus on one area and offer some breathing room. If you choose bold earrings, skip the necklace and go for a stack of bracelets.  Or, if you're wearing chunky rings, forgo a stack of bracelets and add interest with a necklace. If layering necklaces, keep the bracelets and earrings simple.

  • If wearing jewelry daily is new for you, start building a foundation and slowly expand from there. When you buy jewelry pieces you love, they always hold a place in your wardrobe, even if they ebb and flow. Lately, I'm bringing back chunky button earrings from the 90s that I thought I'd never wear again.

  • This season, silver is coming back into focus. I'll never lose my love of gold, so I love mixing these metals.

  • And remember: Costume jewelry can marry with vintage pieces and high-end treasures!

Scarves

  • A scarf can be added to just about any look as the weather changes. Looped and tied loosely around your neck, it offers a classic look. Right now, I'm loving skinny scarves either tied to look like a men's necktie or wrapped around the neck and tucked inside your shirt.

Handbags

  • What we toss over our shoulders or in our arms can be functional and statement-making. This season, suede, bucket, and top-handle bags are taking the spotlight.
