7. How a Vogue Veteran Launched a Stylish Children’s Marketplace to Create Quality Time for Families: Sylvana Durrett

March 23, 2022 | interview by Nada Jones

Sylvana Ward Durrett is the CEO and Co-Founder of Maisonette, a curated children's marketplace. Before founding her own company she worked at Vogue for 14 years as assistant to Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and later as the director of special projects, producing the annual Costume Institute Met Gala.

As a mom scrolling through various sites to find clothes, toys, and furniture for her kids, Sylvana realized that there was a need for a curated marketplace for parents. In 2017 Sylvana co-founded Maisonette to help modern families navigate finding high-quality products for their kids so they could spend less time scrolling, and more time on the good stuff.

In this episode, Nada sits down with Sylvana Durrett to discuss how her experience at Vogue prepared her for the jump to starting her entrepreneurial journey. Sylvana is a breath of fresh and candid air, as she opens up about the importance of knowing and trusting a business partner, the benefits of having a strong woman model decision-making and business savvy in a male-dominated world, and the importance (and manageability) of raising venture funds. The two talk about juggling the roles of founder, wife, and mother—and right on cue, her children pop into the podcast for a first-hand account of how she does it.
