113. Finding Your Niche (Mid-Renovation): Annie Kantor

interview by Nada Jones

With a B.F.A. in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, Annie Kantor honed her craft working in the contract textile industry. She designed woven upholstery and panel fabrics and was Head of the Custom Studio at Maharam. While tackling the renovation of a period home in Oakland, Annie became frustrated by the lack of enticing metal designs—and that was when the light went off. She saw an opportunity to apply her expertise in repeating pattern design and developed a line of custom metalwork that blossomed into her company, Modern Metal.

In this episode, Nada sits with Annie to talk about her experience building a niche business for a high-end market. Annie pinpoints her decision to scale back on one particular effort, which set her on a different course toward growing her revenue. Her joy is evident when she talks about the craftsman she works with and the importance of building a healthy culture. For Annie, the road to a sustainable business was long but ultimately liberating.
